Learn how to apply for a NIF in Portugal: required documents, tax representative, online and in-person application. Updated guide for foreigners.

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the Portuguese tax identification number and one of the first documents any person — Portuguese or foreign — needs to carry out economic activities in Portugal. Without a NIF, you cannot open a bank account, sign a rental contract, buy property, work legally, or access public services.
This guide explains how to obtain a NIF in Portugal in 2026, whether in person or online, with all required documents and tax representative rules.
The NIF is a nine-digit number assigned by the Portuguese Tax Authority (AT) to all individuals and entities with tax obligations in Portugal. It is equivalent to a Social Security Number (US), National Insurance Number (UK), or CPF (Brazil).
Portuguese citizens with a Citizen Card receive the NIF automatically. EU/EEA citizens can apply directly without a tax representative. Third-country nationals (including Brazilians) may need a tax representative if they are non-resident with an address outside the EU/EEA.
| Applicant Type | Documents Required |
|---|---|
| Portuguese citizen | Citizen Card (NIF included) |
| EU/EEA citizen | ID or passport + proof of address |
| Third-country (resident) | Passport + visa/residence permit + proof of address |
| Third-country (non-resident) | Passport + tax representative appointment |
Visit a Serviço de Finanças or Loja de Cidadão with your documents. The NIF is usually issued on the same day. Cost: Free.
Since July 2025, foreigners can apply online through the Tax Authority's e-Balcão portal. Processing takes 2 to 5 business days.
If you cannot travel to Portugal, appoint a tax representative resident in Portugal to handle the application on your behalf.
| Situation | Tax Representative |
|---|---|
| Resident in Portugal | Not required |
| Non-resident, EU/EEA address | Not mandatory |
| Non-resident, non-EU address | Mandatory |
| Non-resident with Portuguese income | Mandatory |
How much does it cost? The NIF is free. Professional fees for representatives vary.
How long does it take? In person: same day. Online: 2-5 business days. Through a representative: 5-15 business days.
Does the NIF expire? No. The NIF is permanent.
Can I apply before moving to Portugal? Yes, through a tax representative or the e-Balcão portal.
Getting a NIF in Portugal is a simple and free process, but it's essential to do it correctly from the start. For non-EU non-residents, appointing a tax representative is the most important step.
